Brian Duffy is vice president and Johnson Space Center (JSC) program manager, Space Launch
Systems, ATK Aerospace Group. Alliant Techsystems (ATK) is a leading aerospace and defense
company with more than 17,000 employees and revenue of approximately $4.8 billion.
Duffy joined ATK in February 2011 and is responsible for strategy and business
development, as well as matching ATK’s capabilities to NASA’s current and future human
space flight requirements including its commercial crew program, Liberty.
Prior to joining ATK, Duffy served in leadership roles with Lockheed Martin. He led the
Altair Lunar Lander program overseeing design work on a vehicle that would carry
astronauts to the moon. Duffy also directed LM’s operations contract at Kennedy Space
Center and directed the activities of a variety of military, space and other programs
critical to national defense.
Duffy also served a distinguished 16-year career with NASA. As a Space Shuttle astronaut,
he flew four missions–two as a mission commander–and has logged more than 977 hours in
space. He held various management and technical positions with NASA at JSC in Houston.
Duffy is a retired U.S. Air Force Colonel, having served for 26 years. While in the Air
Force, he was an F-15 pilot. Following graduation from the U.S. Air Force Test Pilot
School, he served as a test pilot and program manager for uniquely modified F-15 aircraft
at Eglin Air Force Base. Duffy has logged more than 5,000 flight hours in more than 25
different types of aircraft.
A native of Boston, Mass., Duffy received a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the U.S.
Air Force Academy and a master’s degree in systems management from the University of
Southern California.
